    yes, you do use it, 1/2000th is the fastest speed of the 200/2000 series hasselblads, as they possess a focal plane shutter, and for high sunlight, this is useful as it saves having to use filters to block out the light.

      Hi Simon Many thanks for asking, we had a great trip in the Orkneys recently and plans are afoot for the John O'Groats to Lands End trip, a bit of fine tuning to do for the route but looks like we are set for next Summer for the actual trip. Training for me is fine, I cycle 25 miles a day almost every day of the week I think Rob might want to get some more practice in to include hill climbing (not much of those on his sea wall route to Margate!) and some practice cycling with loaded panniers which he doesn't like at all. I think that we are both excited by the trip and will probably both post videos from it (I am hoping to post along route) Dave

I imagine you two wise old men doing similar things and encountering similar "obstacles" that turn out to be blessings in disguise. Let's hope filming the trip to take Robert's mind off the trials and tribulations of bike packing. No doubt his mind will come up with all sorts of devices that he could have added to his bicycle to get him over them there 'ills. Sounds like you are well prepared, physically. You may need to be VERY patient with your brother. He ain't slow, he's my brother; comes to mind. Keep us posted. cheers Dave. Simon

      Hi Andrew Apologies for not replying sooner, this sounds quite odd, I can only imagine that there was crystalisation of the developer to some small degree which were deposited on the film cauisng this contamination. Maybe try warming it a little to dissolve any such crystals that may have formed or filter it and then test? Never seen this my self, would be interested to hear whether you solve the issue and how Best Dave

    Nice work. A persons age at the time they pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree probably has an impact on what the experience means to the artist. I did my MFA in my early twenties. It was a great experience as I was too young and too full of myself to be worried about the meaning of the degree. I just liked the freedom and time to pursue my interest in photography. To an older person it probably means other things as well. One important thing I learned from the experience is that the meaning of what I do artistically is not something I discuss (I hated writing about my work and personal influences). Talking about compositional elements is of interest to me but that’s where I draw the line. Listen to the Garry Winogrand interview with Barbara Lee Diamondstien. He spells out his motivations very clearly in that interview. Best wishes!

Regarding suggestions for future videos, quite some time ago you talked about, and demonstrated, your Fuji GX680 medium format film camera. That was fascinating for me, and I'd love to see more of that type of video where you teach us more about image making: composition, exposure, developing/scanning/printing film etc., as well as the technical and artistic thought processes that get you out taking photographs. By the way, do you still use the big Fuji? More please!

      @DaveJSmith 7 місяців тому

      Hi there Many thanks for your comment, it is much appreciated. I did really like the Fuji, but no longer have it, my issues with the camera are the reliance on batteries, the size and weight of the machine and the age of the cameras which are at least half a century by now! I am currently using the Wista 45SP with a 6x12 RFB though I may try the big Fuji again some day (I also sold my Horseman convertible some years ago and may want to replace that at some point as well) Since the MFA finished I have had some difficultydeciding what to shoot, I am working on developing some projects in Macro, UV and IR photography. Many thanks for your suggestions for future videos they were very useful. I haven't made many videos of late since I have been working pretty hard to get my weight loss to a point that I wanted - this is now finally coming to an end!! So there should be more videos pretty soon and I am thinking of videos about shooting macro, panoramas and UV/IR images. I am also concentrating on making handmade limited edition books from these projects Best wishes Dave

    Hi David, I own the Eskute Netuno of which I gave your brother Robert and his friend a go of at Broom Park August 22. On reference to the battery range diminishing, Try this. Plan a route so your battery totally drains on the way home and turns off the bike. When you get home charge the battery for a full 8 hrs, This will balance the cells to all equal amounts and you will get your range back. I have owned my Netuno for 14 months now and I actually get 65 miles on 3 assist. I also have the battery fully charged for all journeys as I do not intend to be storing the battery fully charged for any period. Plus a fully charged battery gives you more power, acceleration and an effort free ride. Hope this helps. :)

    at 4:28 there is another 'wrench' solution, leica camera repairmen use it, like a jar wrench, but made of aluminium or brass, it looks like a spaceship in shape, with a slot leading to the aperture, where squeezing the two legs tightens the fit, look at how people remove the collars on the flash sockets of the old M2 leica's, That's the tool.

    fyi, this also is the case when you add the HM 16-32 back on any H hasselblad camera, the 2032 inside, dies, and the same repercussions occur, esp when you go to take the magazine off the camera, so one tip, ALWAYS check these batteries before loading the mag, as this replacement might only be possible, like the h cameras with the mag open, so check with a dummy roll before any important shooting sessions.

    So good to see you are going so well, Dave. Interesting comments on the new bike and computer. I too have upgraded to a manual bike after using an ebike for a while. And very interesting comments re weight loss viz a viz calories in, calories out. The proof is obvious; you are looking great and obviously feeling even better. Cycling really is a wonderful pastime, and taking a camera with you is the icing on the cake - not that you eat cake. I’d be keen just to see anything you find interesting in your local environment; given that the chances of me getting there are slim to non-existent and it looks like a lovely part of the world. You could start with that guy Auckland who kindly gave his name to your place and mine. We, in Aotearoa, New Zealand , are going bilingual and reverting to the original names of places; replacing names given by various British personal who, it turns out to less than savoury and certainly not worth honouring in any way. Lord Hamilton comes to mind in this regard. I don’t know the history of Auckland - Bishop Auckland?? Oh , congrats on MFA; what a wonderful achievement. Well done, Dave.

    if you only need a tilt, have you thought of the sinar tilt head?, it has a flat top 5\8th screw, like a tripod column top, and it is small enough, not a large bulky thing, like the linhof one (see the one used by the technika shooters on the youtube channel for linhof store); this is designed to take a P2 , which can have a meter extension of the rails, with a 300 or larger lens on, middle standards, two or more rail clamps, even have two hole cameras connected together, aka two standard sets, ON the one head!! ( they effect this by adding the rail clamps onto a video camera long plate, which connects like an optical bench, to another qr plate, then onto the tripod). PS the sinar system does have an 8x10" standard for the rear, so does shoot this format!!

    dave, the "M" sync is different to the "x" sync socket, not in form, but in function, the M system was for cheMical bulbs, a 1\60th of a sec. delay is introduced to the shutter actuation, allowing for the chemistry to achieve proper white balance aka for the burn to get to optimal temp. this takes time, Xenon lamps (old neon sign bulbs) get to full light intensity immediately!, so no delay is required to daylight balance the film.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 Рік тому

    one reason for the 90 deg. detents on the swing and tilt are to pack it up (in a suitcase, flat) another is, like on sinars, this allows you to use this std as a "bed" for positioning subjects on, like a microscope stage!, but for macro, using the rise\shift to adjust composition; but you add a solid plate on the standard, NOT drilled for a copal shutter, but whole, to lie the subject onto.

    the f-stops on the focus knob, like the sinar f2 are for dof calculation, if you want two points in focus, you set focus on one, zero the dial, then focus on the other, it determines which F stop you need to set both inside the depth of field "box", the other scale, on sinars on the left of the standard post, is for the angles, similar principle, but to achieve sceimflug and get both points inside the same plane, just remember you need to determine +/-, these only give the degree of movement.

      @@DaveJSmith no worries, These are confusing, but I imagine the makers put them there to aid the photographer, esp. in macro and situations where the camera and subject are close up, so that such a narrow dof is dealt with simply, if one hasn't the time for the tables, or (like in the hasselblad v system),to look at the charts in the books on dof, range of focus for each lens, tube, and other combinations, it all gets too scientific, so this is their answer to it, a "cheat", to get the data quick.

      HI Andrew I have tried Mixam and Blurb for making books, but actually much prefer to make my own hand made books (there are some examples on my channel) which is relativley easy to do and I have made coptic stitch casebound book a japanese stab bound books and a perfect bound book. I have also made zines and there is an example of a quite complex zine on my channel. As for the MFA my advice would be do it. I did go back and forth over this for a while but now that I am coming to the end I do feel that it has been a worthwhile experience. One of my motivations came from visiting photo exhibitions in the likes of the Photographer's Gallery and coming away wondering how on earth those particular photos ever got on to a galllery wall. I wanted to better understand the fine art of fine art photography (which is as distinct from that "turn B&W and call it art" brigade). In that regard the course at Ulster led by Ken Grant and Donovan Wylie has been outstanding. I use a student loan to fund it and being a retired person I am unlikely ever to earn more than the 26k when you start making repayments and if I do then I am happy to repay the loan so that might be a way to fund the course. I chose to do the course at Ulster because it is an MFA rather than an MA so it is two years full time (though you actually attend one day a week) and was available online. I do wonder how well an MA would answer those questions that I had about the fine art of fine art of fine art photography. I felt that it would also provide a good jumping off point into a PhD (which I am now applying for). It looks as though I will achieve a distinction in this course and I am stoked about that since going in I would have been happy to achieve the MFA (I think I had a bit of imposter sindrome since Ihave no formal traingin in art or in photography!) I hope that all of that helps and do drop me al ine and let me know if you decide to go for an MFA (or an MA) Best wishes Dave

      HI Tieran Apologies for the dealy in replying, I am in the final month of the MFA and things are a bit hectic! Anyway, Yaw occurs in cameras when the camera bed is tilted up or down and then the back has swing applied. It is possible to alleviate this effect (which causes vertical subject lines to remain parallel to each other but not to the edges of the ground glsaa and therefor the film) by having base and axis tilts (it can also be overcome with full rotating back) I hope that that helps Dave

    Thanks for the video. I've just gotten a GX680 II from Japan and it's in pretty good shape, but no battery. Hopefully it works :-) I don't have a lens yet either, but I ordered one of the 135mm from ebay to get started. Making an adapter plate to take the Nikon battery packs sounds like a great idea. I might have just finally found a reason to /need/ a 3d printer....

      Hi Bob You might want to get one of those AA cases for it instead - they are a bit procey for wha tthey are though. I think some googling might turn up a european seller of a battery - Kamera Doctor used to do them but I think they don't trade anymore? Anyway, good luck with your camera. Check out my video about replacing the internal battery on the film back, if yours doesn't need it now it likely will pretty soon Dave

    one point dave, the Graflex cameras have a FOCAL PLANE shutter, so 1/1000th sec. max shutter speed, as the leaf shutters can only do 1/500th due to size, and the fact each blade must remain fully open for the exposure time, then close. this is why you can hand hold, as the shutter is fast enough to stop the motion blur of hand_holding; eg: for MF cameras, due to the shallow dof, and the telephoto nature of the lenses you MUST tripod shutter speeds longer than 1/125th as this is the slowest you can go handheld reliably, with sharp shots; with LF these factors are less in your favour, dof is even shallower (hence the need for f45 & f64 to get a large enough dof for shooting sharp shots, even at the expence of speed, you would need several sec. exposures to do this).

      Thanks for that Andy, though I think hand holding at 1/125th for this beast is likely to be a bit optimistic! Dave

    Dave, congratulations on your MFA completion and the beautiful images that you created. I've learned a lot from watching your channel. It's hard to believe that it has been 8 years of doing so, starting back when I was researching the Fuji GX680 system and came across your videos on that camera. I hope you keep at it.

      Hi Alex Wow ... 8 years!! Well, many thanks for sticking with the channel. How are you getting on with your Fuji? I have all but stopped bothering with Social Media, but to me UA-cam is a different thing and I will indeed keep at it, though I am likely to change to be more focused on what I think of as 'Field notes' about specific shoots as well as the zines and photobook reviews. Best wishes Dave
